At Old Colony Hospice, we are deeply saddened to share the passing of Doris "Dotti" Cappola Vojak, a beloved member of our community. Dotti, who passed away peacefully on February 15, 2025, left an indelible mark on the lives of everyone she touched. Known for her incredible compassion, dedication, and unwavering service to others, she was a woman whose legacy will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Dotti’s journey began in Quincy, Massachusetts, where she was born on April 21, 1949, to Angelo Ralph Cappola and Valia (Bersani) Cappola. After graduating from North Quincy High School, Dotti pursued her passion for nursing, earning her degree at Laboure College. This marked the start of a remarkable career that spanned decades, during which Dotti became a cornerstone in the field of emergency nursing.
Her work in emergency departments—most notably at Carney Hospital, University Hospital and Boston City Hospital—was marked by a deep passion for helping the vulnerable and underserved. But it was her involvement with the Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) that truly showcased her spirit of service. Dotti responded to some of the most pivotal moments in history, including the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, Hurricane Katrina and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, just to name a few. Her work with DMAT and other humanitarian efforts exemplified her dedication to helping people in their darkest hours.
It was at Ground Zero in 2001, following the devastating 9/11 attacks, where Dotti’s life would take an unexpected turn. While serving as a frontline nurse, she was exposed to toxic materials at the site, a risk that would later lead to her diagnosis of cancer. This was a challenge unlike any other she had faced, but Dotti approached it with the same fierce determination and strength that had defined her life. Even as she underwent treatment for cancer, Dotti never lost sight of her commitment to others. She continued to serve in whatever capacity she could, even as she battled this disease. Her resilience was a testament to her unbreakable spirit, and her courage in the face of such hardship became an inspiration to all who knew her.
Though cancer presented significant physical challenges, it never dimmed Dotti’s ability to love or to bring joy to those around her. Throughout her battle, she maintained her sense of humor, her compassionate nature, and her love for her family. She cherished every moment with her loved ones, continuing to create precious memories, no matter the circumstances. Dotti’s strength in the face of illness mirrored the same strength she had shown in every aspect of her life—whether on the frontlines of disaster zones or in the quiet moments spent with her family at home.
Dotti’s contributions, however, were not limited to her professional life. Her love for her family was boundless. Dotti created a home that was always open to others, with a pot of coffee brewing and an open door for family and friends alike. Whether she was hosting family dinners or enjoying vacations with her beloved husband Michael, Dotti made those around her feel loved and cherished. Her grandchildren, in particular, held a special place in her heart, and she made sure to create precious memories with each of them.
Beyond her career and family life, Dotti had a profound passion for art. Known for her lifelike portraits, she became a familiar name in the local art community, with some of her work proudly displayed in the Plymouth Center for the Arts. In her later years, Dotti began exploring sculpture, demonstrating her endless curiosity and dedication to personal growth.
Dotti's spirit of giving and her fierce love for her family, friends, and patients will forever be remembered. She embodied the very best of what it means to serve others with grace, compassion, and resilience. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched, and we are all better for having known her.
As we reflect on Dotti’s life, we are reminded of the incredible impact one person can have, not only through their work but through their love, kindness, and the way they make others feel. Dotti’s life was a testament to the power of selfless service, and her story will continue to inspire us all as we carry forward the lessons she imparted through her actions.
Our hearts are with her family, especially her devoted husband Michael, her children, and her grandchildren, as they navigate this difficult time. Though Dotti is no longer with us in body, her spirit of love, service, and strength will continue to inspire us and guide us, just as it did throughout her life.
May we all be inspired to live with the same compassion, dedication, and love that Dotti shared so freely with the world.
